Volume 2: French Is Hard!

Bonjour famille et amis! Comment allez-vous ?

Time really does fly by as a missionary! Can’t believe week 2 has already come and gone! December 15 is gonna come up quick!

The missionary schedule has started to become much more automatic for me which is great... minus the waking up aspect. I don’t know what it is but I’m not sure if I will ever get used to it, that’s just how life goes I guess. But other than that the mission life is going well! I love all 4 of my teachers! That’s right, I have 4 now. Like I said in my last email we were getting 2 new teachers for the remainder of the MTC, Sœur Rutter, and Sœur Moore. Sadly, Sœur Moore got sick, so Sœur Holt, Frere Miller came in to  save the day! I’m so grateful for all of my teachers! They know so much about the gospel, and I can’t wait to learn more! Most important, they really know how to make class fun! Then there is my district, I don’t even know where to start! They are amazing! We have the most fun inside the classes, and outside. We have been able to set up times each week to meet together and just talk about anything that’s on our mind! Some of my favourite moments were when the Canadians took an American citizen test, and passed, and the Americans took a Canadian citizen test and failed. This sums up that Canada is superior to America hands down. Another thing I liked was when we played hangman. My word was “jambalaya” and no one could get it. It was a good time. Finally, my companion is the bomb, we have gotten along so well! We have the best discussions both spiritual and casual! We could talk for hours! We also have had the opportunity to teach two lessons this week, and both have gone well! We definitely got better from the first lesson to the second. It really helped when we learned the do’s and don’ts for teaching after our first lesson... luckily, we were able to still have a great first lesson! Each time we have been able to teach, the spirit has been super strong! I’m super grateful that our hard work has paid off!

Now for the French... it has been going a lot better then the first week, but we are just learning so much each day it’s hard to comprehend everything! But I have been able to find ways that help me remember the different words, and phrases that are most relevant towards teaching lessons, and meeting new people! We did a practice lesson in French, which caught me off guard because I was definitely not ready for it. In the end, I was able to get my point across... I think. I just feel bad for Elder Card because it took me all the time I was given plus all his time to do so. Frere Miller thought I just had so much to say about the gospel, when really I was just trying to put everything into google translate. I have come to the conclusion that without google translate I would be doomed. Finally, Frere Miller decided to tell a story all in French. That was a trial all on its own because I probably understood a few words per sentence. The worst was when people were laughing, and there I was... not. In the end, the one thing I need to remember is that learning French is not a sprint, it’s a marathon (thanks Frere Miller). I can’t expect to know everything right as I hear it, because that’s just not realistic. Instead, I need to continue to study hard, ask for help, and give my best effort. I know that when we put our best effort toward something, God will help us get through it, but only if we are willing to put in the work. He will never ask us to exceed our maximum effort. He only asks that we reach the top of that maximum effort, because he knows what we all can do.

“Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. -3 Nephi 14: 7-8

Bonne nuit, tout le monde!
